A PLACE FOR YOU
We believe there needs to be a place for people at Collier
and a place for people within our community:
to be … to do … to study … to grow … to play …
to draw close to God …
to be closer to one another;
a place where faith can come to life;
a place where faith can find expression.

Programs and Groups for Adults

ADULT EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES

Christians of all ages need to be involved in study. Sometimes all ages learn together and sometimes only with their own age or interest group. In this congregation there are a wide variety of opportunities for all adults to learn about and experience the Christian faith, either as participants or as leaders. I invite you to consider the possibilities.

Alpha
Anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. All ages are welcome.
Learning and Laughter. It is possible to learn about the Christian faith and have fun at the same time.
Pasta & pie. Eating a meal together gives people an opportunity to get to know each other.
Helping one another. The small groups help give you a chance to discuss issues during the talks.
Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is seen as too simple or too hostile.
The course consists of a series of video talks and group discussions about the life and teachings of Jesus.

Phone Gwen Galbraith 728-9509 for more information on the next time this course is being offered.

Thursday Morning Bible Study
The Thursday morning (9:30-11:30) Bible-based Study Group learn, laugh and hate to miss their Thursday mornings. Scripture, song and prayer are part of their time together with and for our wonderful God. Come and see what they are all about! Call the Church and leave a message for Sharon Totten.

L.I.F.E. GROUPS (Living in Faith Everyday)
Small group study in informal settings designed to build people up in their faith in an atmosphere of friendship and trust. The sole purpose of L.I.F.E. Groups is to provide an atmosphere in which Christians:

  • can grow in their faith
  • can live in community with their sisters and brothers in Christ
  • can become disciples of Jesus and servants to each other and the world
  • care that they are part of the group!
  • New L.I.F.E. Group – Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m. at Collier
  • Women’s Groups – Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. at Midway Diner, 151 Bradford Street.

LIVING THE QUESTIONS DISCUSSION GROUP
Be part of a small group that intentionally commits to be in relationship in a way that is safe and nurturing as we discuss how our lives and our faith intersect.

In 2012 we look forward to watch and discuss “Eclipsing Empire: Paul, Rome, and the Kingdom of God”, which explores fresh insights into Paul’s message of the Kingdom of God, its challenge to Roman imperial theology, and the apostle’s radical relevance for today.  This is open to anyone who is interested.

We will meet for 6 weeks beginning on February 15 from 7 -9 pm or Thursdays 2-4 pm at Collier Street United. Please call Ruth McDonald at Collier (705-726-1511) to sign up. Space is limited to 12 for each group.

MOM'S NEED A BREAK
Mother of Tots is a program offered to mothers from Collier and the Community. We have an excellent team of Collier volunteers who care for the children while the Mothers have a break. The mothers are very appreciative of this break and it gives them an opportunity to meet new friends and to share in their roles as a parent, wife, etc.
2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month at 9:30 a.m.

PRAYER MINISTRY
Each week a group of loving people receive a prayer sheet from the Church Office (from Prayer Requests submitted on Sunday mornings) and individually, throughout the days of the week, lift up those requests to God in prayer ~ praying for the health and healing, the needs and concerns of our people.

SENIOR CHOIR
Our Senior Choir, under the excellent leadership of Judy Rodger and Tom Loney, meets weekly (Thursday nights 7:30) to prepare musical numbers for presentation in regular Sunday worship. Special music is prepared for our Good Friday Service and on Christmas Eve they present a glorious service of Lessons and Carols. Music is a beautiful vehicle through which the Christian faith is expressed.

STORIES OF GOD: COLLIER’S READING CIRCLE
There are great books out there to inspire and challenge; great stories that bear witness to the stories of our lives; great biblical themes expressed in fresh and contemporary ways. Here’s a chance to read them and to talk about them in a circle of friendship within the Book Club.
4th Wednesday of Sept., Nov., Jan., March, May & July from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

THE UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
The U.C.W. provides a place and program where women of the congregation can meet and express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service. Outreach Ministries

“When our hearts are moved,”
it has been written,
“our hands are moved in the direction of our hearts ~ always.”

Believing that we have been blessed to be a blessing, that to whom much has been given much is required, we open our doors … financially support … and offer leadership to the following:

RAINBOWS CANADA
There are many families in our community who are dealing with loss within their family structure. These losses involve separation and divorce. The purpose of the RAINBOWS program is to assist the family members going through the various stages of grieving. It is also very important for them to acknowledge the fact that they are not alone and that talking about their loss is very helpful. The Rainbows group supported and run by Collier is thankful we can offer a program for our own people and the community. It is our way of saying we are here to help and we care. Mondays 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. from September to December

BARRIE OUT OF THE COLD
The Mission Statement of Barrie Out of the Cold
Barrie Out of the Cold provides nutritious meals to those in need and emergency shelter for the homeless, in a safe, welcoming environment from November until April.

Barrie Out of the Cold is a registered, non-profit, charitable organization operating as an outreach program of Collier United Church. There is no government funding for this program and it is wholly supported by donations from the community at large, the churches and local businesses.
The board of directors is responsible for the administration of the program, and the coordinators in each of the six churches form the “coordinators’ committee”, which is the operational “arm” of BOOTC. All of the board members and coordinators are volunteers.

Collier St. United Church hosts two nights, Saturday and Sunday, from 5 pm until 8 am. There are five other churches involved with this program. St. Andrew’s (Mon), Hi Way Pentecostal (Tues), St. Mary’s (Wed), Barrie Free Methodist (Thurs.) and Central United (Fri)
Approximately 400 volunteers assist on the various shifts at Collier and approximately 1,500 throughout the whole program.

The purpose of the program is to provide food and shelter, without question or judgement, for those who are in need. During the 2004/5 season, almost 20,000 meals were served and the Out of the Cold volunteers were able to provide homeless people with assistance 3,655 times.

More Out of the Cold information is available on their web site, www.barrieoutofthecold.org

COLLIER’S MISSION FUND
