Sunday Programs

Join us week by week, Sunday by Sunday, special occasion by special occasion, as we gather as God’s people in our beautiful sanctuary (built in 1864) to worship God in the beauty of holiness.

Worship At Collier

We worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. throughout the year except on the Sunday prior to Christmas Day & on Easter Sunday when we offer 2 worship services. We offer our praise to God in music, prayer, preaching, sacrament and special times with our children. Services are followed by Continental Breakfast in Fellowship Hall and, on many occasions, by congregational luncheons. Nursery and Preschool Care and our Children’s Program are offered every Sunday throughout the year.

  • Special services are held during the Lenten Season
  • Noonday services at 12 noon (preceded and followed by a luncheon) on the six Tuesdays preceding Easter Sunday;
  • a Good Friday service at 10:30 a.m.;
  • a Tenebrae service at 7:30 p.m. on Easter Eve;
  • an Easter Sunrise Service on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay on Heritage Park.
  • Three special services are held on Christmas Eve:
    • 6:30 ~ The Pageant of the Nativity with our Youth Choir
    • 8:30 ~ A Service of Lessons and Carols with our Senior Choir and Soloists
    • 10:30 ~ A Service of Holy Communion
  • Holy Communion is celebrated in 4 major services throughout year and after-service on the second Sunday of each month when there is no major communion:
  • 1st Sunday in October (World Wide Communion)
  • 1st Sunday in the Season of Advent;
  • Palm Sunday
  • 2nd Sunday of June (Confirmation Class welcomed)
  • We welcome New Members four times a year on the Sundays preceding our major Communion Sundays.
  • We welcome our shut-ins for a wonderful luncheon and worship on the Tuesday following each major Communion.
Worship is the time we gather together as a church family.
We worship with the heartfelt conviction that we also worship outside our service times, where “to worship rightly is to love each other, each smile a hymn, each kindly deed a prayer.”
Collier St. United is completely
wheelchair accessible.

Christian Education

Sunday Programs for Children & Youth
Our Sunday Children’s Program provides a safe and loving place where little ones are cared for (Nursery) … where children learn the stories of Jesus and principles of faith at an age appropriate level (Junior and Multi-Age Programs) … where older youth can get in a little deeper (Learning In The Loft) … and where all are welcomed in the name of the God who loves them

Nursery
We offer wonderful care for the youngest members of our church family. The teams are made up of volunteers who are parents, grandparents, teens and other adults who are ready to accept children 15 minutes prior to the beginning of worship. Children must be signed-in & signed-out in M7. Our Nursery Co-ordinator always welcomes new volunteers to add to our wonderful teams which are scheduled for one Sunday each month.

Age 3-SK Class
In September of each year children who are 3 years of age, or will be 3 before the end of December and toilet trained, are encouraged to move in to the Age 3-SK group. The Nursery is still available if they are not quite ready for a more planned program.

There are two leaders scheduled for each week and are ready to accept children 15 minutes prior to the beginning of worship. This class meets in the L9-10 for sign-in before the service & then for story, activities and sign-out.  Children must be “signed-in” - you have two options:

  1. Sign-in before worship and indicate that your child will accompany you for the first part of the Worship Service. After the Children’s Time they will go to their class. It is a good idea that you ensure your youngest children are escorted to their classes.
  2. Sign-in before worship and leave your child in the care of the leader or helper until the other children come out of the sanctuary.

    Children must also be signed-out by a parent/adult.
Multi Age Class
All children from grades 1-6 attend the first part of the worship service. This multi-age group then gathers in L7 for a story, a song and the offering before they continue to explore the theme or story through a variety of learning centers. These centers located in L1-6 may include art, writing, drama, board games, puzzles, active games, or baking. We have 6 regular Leaders scheduled for this group for each Sunday. Parent helpers are always welcome to join us.

Learning in the Loft
Those who are in grade 7 to 9 have their own class time in the Youth Group Loft. Like the Multi-Age Class, they also attend the first part of worship. This group is made largely of the Junior Youth Group which meets on Wednesday nights. So some of our learning is connected to what is happening in the Youth Group.

Program Coordinators
We have Program Co-ordinators for each of the age levels, Nursery, Junior Program (Age 3 to Senior Kindergarten) and Senior Program (Multi-age & Learning in the Loft). Completed Registration Forms can be left for them at the Reception Desk, or with a class leader. All children from Nursery to Grade 9 must be registered to be a regular member of the Sunday Children’s Program. Visitor Registration Forms are required for Nursery & Beginner Classes only.

Summer Programs
We continue to offer programs for all children Nursery to Grade 8 when we move into our Summer schedule. Our regular program runs until the end of June after which we provide a more informal care program until the first Sunday in September.

The number of children attending will be lower so the Junior Program (Age 3-SK) will meet together with the Nursery in M5-M7. Our Senior Program, those entering Grade 1 to those who have just finished Grade 9, will meet and remain in L7. Some of our regular Leaders will continue to volunteer but we can only offer our Summer Sessions if we have one volunteer helper for Junior Program and one for Senior Program for each Sunday.

Our regular Nursery Volunteers also take a well-deserved break during the summer so we need other people to sign up for the summer months. The Nursery will be open on Sunday mornings but parents may need to remain with their children if there are not enough volunteers.

If you have any questions about any of our Sunday Children’s Programs please phone Andrea Wheaton, Staff Associate, at the church office 726-1511.

CONFIRMATION CLASS
In preparation for church membership, secondary school students (usually in grades 9 and/or 10) meet with our minister and staff associate. Baptism … Confirmation … Who is Jesus? … What it means to be a Christian … the Christian life … and questions of faith are all discussed in an atmosphere of openness … where every question is as important as the questioner. We meet from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. for about 8 Sundays. We also have addition class time with a Presbytery Confirmation weekend and other outings.

FRIENDSHIP BIBLE STUDY
This is a group for developmentally challenged adults. “Friendship” is a Sunday School Class with learning-level-appropriate material for our special needs friends. Volunteer leadership with capable, loving and understanding people is provided. They meet Sundays from 9:15-10:15 a.m. and then attend worship. A taxi service is provided for those who need transportation to and from worship.

ADULT STUDIES
Occasional study groups for adults are offered from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.

Our Music Ministry

SENIOR CHOIR
Our Senior Choir, under the excellent leadership of Judy Rodger and Tom Loney, meets weekly (Thursday nights) to prepare musical numbers for presentation in regular Sunday worship. Special music is prepared for our Good Friday Service and on Christmas Eve they present a glorious service of Lessons and Carols. Music is a beautiful vehicle through which the Christian faith is expressed.
